Vilamoura, Algarve, August 1, 2026 – The inaugural Portugal Invitational is perfectly poised for a spectacular finish after a dramatic second round at The Els Club Vilamoura. A late twist on Saturday left Stewart Cink, Padraig Harrington and Rory Sabbatini tied for the lead at 13-under-par, while Zach Johnson sits just one stroke back, setting the stage for a fascinating battle between four of the biggest names on PGA TOUR Champions.

For much of the afternoon, Sabbatini looked set to take a solo advantage into the final round after another outstanding display. The Slovak, who joined PGA TOUR Champions just four months ago, carded a second consecutive six-under-par 65 and stood alone at the top of the leaderboard before a bogey at the 17th left the door slightly ajar for his closest challengers, who took full advantage.

Charles Schwab Cup leader Stewart Cink produced the round of the day, propelling himself into contention by firing an eight-under-par 64 after one of the most extraordinary starts of the tournament. The American opened birdie-birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie to play his first five holes in six-under-par, briefly raising the possibility of an exceptional score before settling into a steadier rhythm over the remainder of his round.

“The start was just laser-focused,” said Cink. “It was almost perfect shot after perfect shot for the first six holes. I’ve never had a start like that, so it definitely put me in a weird sort of vibe. I came back down to earth a little bit, but all in all it was a really pleasing day.”

Cink will begin Sunday tied for the lead as he chases his fifth victory of the season, a result that would further strengthen his position at the top of the Charles Schwab Cup standings ahead of the Playoffs. He is also aiming to become the first player since Bernhard Langer, who achieved the feat from 2014 to 2016, to finish as the circuit’s Number One in consecutive seasons.

Harrington completed the three-way tie with a closing birdie at the 18th, signing for a six-under-par 66 to join Cink and Sabbatini at 13-under-par. The Irishman, recently appointed as a vice-captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor, is chasing his second PGA TOUR Champions victory of the season and the opportunity to become the inaugural Portugal Invitational champion.

“I’m very happy with the score. Obviously you’re under a lot of pressure to go low out there. Every time you look up at that leaderboard – I try not to look at leaderboards, but it’s hard to miss – you just see people going low. You’re under a lot of pressure to keep going forward. Thankfully that putt on the last should get me into the last group,” Harrington said.

Just one shot behind the leading trio is Zach Johnson, whose composed two-under-par 68 keeps the two-time major champion firmly in the mix. After leading following an opening-round 64, Johnson remains in an ideal position to challenge for a fourth victory of the campaign and ensure Sunday’s finale features the four standout performers of the week.

The quality of the leaderboard reflects the strength of the first edition of the Portugal Invitational. The top three players in the current Charles Schwab Cup standings, Cink, Johnson and Harrington, will all begin the final round with a chance to lift the trophy, while Sabbatini has the opportunity to secure a breakthrough victory in just his fourth month on PGA TOUR Champions.

Further back, Tim O’Neal and Mikael Lundberg share fifth place at 10-under-par, while Spain’s Miguel Ángel Jiménez continued his charge with a six-under-par 66 to move into the top 10.

With three players tied for the lead, another just one stroke adrift and no margin for error, everything is in place for a memorable final day as the Portugal Invitational prepares to crown its champion.
